These external SATA RAID enclosures feature built in SATA Port Multipliers that support Software RAID or Hardware RAID control and provide a high-performance connection between a single SATA port and multiple SATA hard drives.  

Software RAID enclosures can be used as individual drives (JBOD) or as RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5 arrays etc. (depending upon the capabilities of the SATA controller card used).  

Hardware RAID enclosures have built in RAID controllers, taking the load off of the computer CPU.
